Emphasis on Family Engagement Brings Praise from US Department of Education

Updated December 18, 2012

“One of the biggest things family engagement did for me was that it made me want to stay in teaching.”
- Melissa Bryant, 4th grade teacher and 2012 Rubenstein Award Recipient for Excellence in Teaching

DC Scholars Stanton Elementary’s implementation of Family Engagement strategies, with the help of the Flamboyan Foundation, has been so successful that the US Department of Education (USDE) decided to introduce their new Family Engagement Capacity Building framework at the school. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan led the December 5th round-table that showcased Stanton’s remarkable story.  Here is video footage from the day that also highlights our partnership with Flamboyan.

Family and community engagement is at the core of the Scholar Academies model that puts every student on the PATH to college.   Since 2010 DC Scholars Stanton Elementary’s Reading proficiency has doubled, and Math proficiency has tripled.  In that same time span enrollment of neighborhood students has increased, truancy has been reduced by 50%, and attendance has increased to 95%.
